Our members comprise approximately 45% of the entire membership of the region's total. For a current list of Architects in the region please refer to the MSA Practice Directory.
The MSA is a voluntary organisation that relies on the enthusiasm of its members to help promote architecture and design throughout the North West through lectures, events and to encourage social and networking opportunities within Manchester’s architectural community. If you are interested in joining the MSA, please do not hesitate to contact the current president for further information.
The Manchester Society of Architects (MSA) was formed in 1865, it was affiliated to become a branch of the RIBA in 1891, and has a membership numbering approximately 800. The Society is the largest in the North West region of the RIBA and our members comprise approximately 45% of the entire region’s total. The illustrious history of the MSA charts Manchester's rise to prominence from 'Cottonopolis' into a pioneering European City. Past Presidents have included many prestigious Manchester architects. For over 140 years through the generations, these architects have shaped the City of Manchester as we know it today.
The MSA represents and supports the architects and the architectural students of Manchester and promotes their work. We are supported by our chapters, Stockport Tameside and Macclesfield and Wigan Bolton and Bury. Manchester Young Practitioners in Architecture are also affiliated with the MSA. It organizes architectural events, lectures, travel scholarships and bursaries to students and organizes the annual MSA design awards which showcases the talents of Mancunian architects and architectural students.
The Manchester Society of Architects Library is an outstanding historical resource which can be viewed by appointment as part of the MMU Special Collections.
In October 2006 The MSA were pleased to announce the historic amalgamation of the MSA (Manchester Society of Architects) and the MSA (Manchester School of Architecture) to form a new and closer partnership between the architectural practices and the school.... "MSA²".
In 2009 the Manchester Society of Architects established the Manchester Architecture and Design Festival (MADF) in collaboration with Manchester School of Architecture, RIBA NorthWest, CUBE, MSSA and EASA2010

Grant Erskine
Originally from Belfast, Grant came to Manchester in 2003 to study at the Manchester School of Architecture and qualified at Chester in Autumn 2010.
The MSA awards continue to form a vital link between practitioners and architectural students in Manchester. The MSA Student Travel Awards have enabled students to travel to a wide range of destinations and experience architecture in context at first hand. This has allowed them to further their knowledge in their chosen area of study and the benefit of their experience has been passed on to fellow students and practitioners by way of written reports and informal illustrated talks at the annual MSA Events Week.
The Winstanley and MSA Scholarships have assisted both students and practitioners to engage in studies into fields of particular interest, which in many instances have involved research abroad.
The Bradshaw Gass Bolton Scholarship has provided substantial financial assistance to award winners wishing to engage in full-time courses at or associated with the combined Manchester School of Architecture (formerly the University and Polytechnic Schools). The award has enabled architects to study for further qualifications as well as assisting architectural students to complete or enhance their studies.
The Rossant Award for draughtsmanship, which was instituted in memory of the late Lorrie Rossant, a partner at BDP, is awarded annually to the best Second Year student from the Manchester School. The purpose of the award is to encourage and reward skill and versatility in draughtsmanship. This award is essentially for excellence in drawing technique though it is recognised that this can take many forms bearing in mind the increasingly diverse media and more adventurous means of expression available to us.
The MSA looks forward to an enthusiastic response from all quarters of the architectural profession. The funds are there to help you so first year or sixth yea, why not apply? Seniority is not an issue and you can apply more than once. Get in on your CV.

Simon Green
Simon is actively involved in the North West architectural scene in his role as Ex Officio of the Manchester Society of Architects.
The Society meets in the Magnet Public House, Wellington Road North, Stockport generally on second Thursday of every month, where we plan the building tours and trips. Refreshments are provided but now funded by attendees at £1/head due to loss of RIBA funding.
Starting way back in 2000, it is now a tradition to go away for the first weekend in September, to some interesting town or city, where a guided tour or walk is arranged for everyone. Information packs are provided to allow the stay to be personalised, but all accommodation and travel is organised, and booked. There is always an architectural reason for going to a particular place, but it is never all serious, and we have been punting on the Cam, on a ghost walk in York and taken a river trip in Cardiff! We are joined by partners, and friends, and have heard that when going with the architects you see the things differently and it is quite entertaining!
Special Building tours have been organised locally to buildings prior to their opening; e.g The Lowry a month before the Queen opened it.
We now organise foreign trips, and have been to Barcelona, St Petersburg, Dublin, Gdansk, Prague, Valencia, Istanbul, and Bruges
We have two other standard events; the Christmas social but also with a presentation or talk and a buffet meal, and the AGM in April which also has a speaker and refreshments.
We also organise social trips which have include the ale train from Dewsbury back to Stalybridge and Manchester, meals on canal boats, and visits to the Manchester.
All trips are self funding but the development of the programme of events happens at the committee meeting so should you wish to join us you can contact any of the officers by email;

Ürün Kiliç BA (Hons) BArch RIBA
Ürün was elected to the MSA Council in summer 2007 as representative of M'YPA (Manchester's Young Practitioners in Architecture).
The group comprises architectural private practice sole principals from across the northwest region meeting monthly in Knutsford to offer an informal forum for members to discuss issues in common, provide mutual support and attend a programme of continuing professional development events. Membership of this group enables principals of small practices to meet professional indemnity insurer´s requirements for emergency cover, and provides members with a cost effective method of meeting ARB and RIBA CPD requirements.
Eligible members of the SPG are RIBA registered principals, working alone or with employees and not in partnership. These small to medium size practices offer a diverse range of experience and specialism to clients. The group is a linked society of the RIBA and has seats on the RIBA North West Regional Council and the Manchester Society of Architects Council.
